The year only started recently but we already have several serious breaches of security around the world. Some incidents were severe enough that the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures was more than obvious. As cyberattacks are expected to grow in sophistication and frequency, companies are trying to tighten their safety measures. Suffering the digital attack and bearing the consequences is the absolute PR nightmare for every company. Defending against breaches has become increasingly difficult and will require innovative solutions.
TalkTalk Data Breach
In January 2025, TalkTalk, a UK-based telecommunications company, experienced a data breach involving a third-party supplier. A hacker known only by his alias “b0nd” claimed that he got ahold of the personal information of more than 18 million people. Luckily, bank accounts and other financial information were not part of the theft. In cases like this, you should resort to removing your personal info from Google. Companies that handle large amounts of personal data are especially vulnerable to thefts and present a fertile ground for criminal activities.
PowerSchool Data Breach
PowerSchool, an online student information portal widely used in U.S. K-12 schools experienced a cyberattack in December 2024. The company delayed announcing the attack to the public in an effort to avoid bad publicity and save its reputation. The safety breach affected schools across the state of Connecticut. Supposedly, social security numbers were intact, while other information, like names and addresses of students, were in jeopardy. The investigation is still ongoing, and the PowerSchool is heavily scrutinized for waiting two weeks before reporting that the attack happened.
Community Health Center, Inc. (CHC) Data Breach
Community Health Center, Inc. (CHC), a medical clinic network in Middletown, Connecticut, experienced a major data breach in January 2025. Over a million patients were affected by this attack when their personal information, including social security numbers, was the target. CHC’s computer network contains all medical records that are highly sensitive and confidential. The clinic tried to patch up broken trust with patients by offering them free identity theft protection.
Conduent Cybersecurity Incident
Ironically, Conduent, an IT service provider suffered a significant cybersecurity incident in January 2025. This was a major incident since it affected government agencies’ payment systems. Without giving any details, the company is trying to keep the attack under wraps while dealing with the aftermath. The extent of the damage remains unknown – the only statement given by the Conduent was that they’re working to restore services.
PayPal Settlement
The New York State Department of Financial Services declared that PayPal will pay $2 million in a settlement for failing to comply with security rules and regulations. The safety breach happened three years ago, but it took three years for the company to admit to any wrongdoing settling the case for a tiny portion of their profits. Personally identifiable information (PII) was compromised while PayPal was trying to keep the attack concealed from the public. PayPal has agreed to enhance its cybersecurity practices and comply with state regulations.
